Dogs and Cats Unite
I’m sometimes asked, “Is it possible to train dogs and cats to get along?” The answer in short is yes, but they much be introduced slowly and carefully. It’s a good idea to start off by keeping the two away from each other, but able to smell one another. This is a good introduction, as they’re able to pick up valuable information about each other through smelling each other’s scent.
The next step that I’d recommend is putting your dog on a leash and have someone carry the cat into the room where you have the dog. Distance will be a key, so start off by keeping them a good distance away from each other. Our goal is for them to see each other without a negative reaction. Create a positive association by giving your dog a super yummy treat, or a favorite toy. I recommend using this high value treat only when they are together. Also only give it to your dog when he/she sees the cat and is well behaved. Over time your dog will begin to associate good things when the cat comes into the room. The reason the dog is on the leash is so that you can have control of the situation and prevent chasing or aggression.
Don’t allow your dog to chase and torment the cat. In the early stages of the training always have your dog on leash so you can quickly and easily stop the chasing if it occurs.
I always suggest basic obedience for dogs, especially if a cat is around. It’s important that your dog learns to listen and obey you at all times, and even around distractions. A good trainer can teach you leave-it and recall, which is vitally important when dogs are around cats.
Give your cat a safe zone, where they can retreat to free from the dog. The dog should at no time be permitted in this area. It’s a good idea to put the litter box, food and water for the cat in this location.
It’s not a bad idea to have your cat’s nails trimmed regularly. You might even invest in claw covers for your cat if scratching becomes an issue.
Remember some dogs are bred to hunt vermin, and it can be difficult to teach them to coexist with a cat. They might view the cat as vermin. Some breeds are inclined to chase, and herd.
You should also give your dog an adequate amount of exercise and mental stimulation daily.
