Wisdom of Life

FAQ’s

What type of training does Focused Dog utilize?

We’re firm believers in the use of positive, force-free, reward- based training.   Our training methods are dog and people friendly, and rooted in science.  We also encourage setting the dogs up for success.

Can I train more than one dog at a time?

We highly recommend that you train one dog at a time, as it’s very difficult to accomplish the training program with more than one dog at your side.  You may consider asking another family member to train with you, if you have more than one dog that needs training.

Can I miss a class?

In order to have a successful experience we highly recommend attending each class.  Though we encourage you to attend each class we realize it’s not always feasible.   Be sure to speak with your trainer to make arrangements ahead of time.

Where are the group classes held?

In Visalia our classes are held at Sunset Park.

What sort of dog collar/harness do you recommend for training?

It really depends on the dog!  Generally I recommend a body harness of some sort.  One of my favorites for medium and large dogs is the Freedom No-Pull Body Harness by Wiggles and Wags.  I’m also fond of the Perfect Fit Harness and DogReins.  For small dogs a Puppia Dog Harness would be a good choice.  Anything that inflicts harm on your dog, or is aversive, is something you should definitely avoid.   Check out http://www.petexpertise.com/focuseddog  if you’d like to order a harness online.

Does my dog need their shots to attend class?

Yes, all dogs must be up-to-date on their vaccines.

Can more than one person in my family attend class?

Absolutely!  We encourage everyone in the family to be involved in the training process.  Small children may attend, but must be supervised by an adult (other than the one responsible for training) at all times and not disruptive to the class.

Are there age requirements for dogs attending basic obedience classes?

For the safety of your puppy we recommend waiting until they’ve had their vaccines for their age.  It’s critically important to socialize a puppy.  With that in mind we strongly urge you to start socializing the puppy safely immediately.

What sort of time commitment should I expect to ensure a successful training program?

Throughout the six-weeks you’ll be asked to work with your dog for brief training periods throughout the day.   You can expect to spend about 20 minutes a day throughout the program in order to have a successful experience.

Are there specific temperament requirements for dogs to be in your group class?

If your dog has previously bitten a person or another dog, or is aggressive/reactive, they might not be ready for group class.  In those cases we recommend private lessons.

Should I go with private or group lessons?

There are advantages to both.  Here are some considerations:  Some people learn best in a private setting, one on one.   Some dogs aren’t ready for a group class.  If your dog is reactive to strangers or other dogs, I would highly recommend private lessons.  I’d also recommend that route if you’re wanting help with an unwanted behavior like elimination in the home or destructive chewing.  The group class is a great opportunity for socialization, as your dog is receiving things they enjoy in the presence of other people and dogs.  That’s a huge plus.  Also the group class is the more affordable option of the two.

What to bring to class

When attending Focused Dog’s group class, please bring the following:

A four to six foot long leash.   (Thickness should reflect the size of the dog)  Retractable leashes are not recommended.

A body harness that is in good condition that fits your dog.  Please no prong/shock collars or choke chains.

Bring a bag of pea-sized soft treats that your dog really likes.  Make sure your dog is hungry prior to class.   Discover what your dog loves, and use it.  I recommend going for healthy treats, if at all possible.

A treat pouch would come in handy!

All dogs should have adequate identification.

Wear shoes that prevent injury.  Please no open-toed shoes or sandals.

Please have a waste disposal tool or bag.

A food-stuffable toy to keep your dog busy and happy while the instructor is talking.

Your dog’s bed/mat.

Children must be supervised by an adult not participating in the class.
